Char Valley Parish Council -- How do I...?
How do I find out where to recycle things?
There's a great site called recyclenow.com that tells you what to do with just about everything. Apparently the most common question is about batteries... Batteries should never be placed in any household or litter bin. They can be recycled at collection points provided in many shops that sell them or taken with you on your next essential visit to your local Household recycling centre. Alternatively, place in a reusable battery bag and put out alongside or on top of your recycling bin/glass box. The infrastructure needed to get power to your house is the responsibility of National Grid plc (it used to be Western Power). So, when your lights stop working, that is the company you need to contact. The number to call (and it may be worth having this somewhere to hand) is 105 (or 0800 6783 105). How do I add myself to the Priority Register?
As you all know, we suffer from occasional power cuts in our area (see above for what to do if there is one). National Grid keeps a ‘Priority Services Register'. This is for people who may be old, infirm, seriously unwell, have hearing or sight problems or, most important of all, have medical equipment in the home that requires electricity. Once you are on the register, National Grid can offer a dedicated phone number to call for updates, advice on what to do and how long the power cut will last, and support from charity partners such as the Red Cross, if help is required. They are not promising to get your power up and running before anybody else’s. But the support and advice could be very useful and reassuring. The simplest way to register is here on the National Grid website. There is a simple form to fill in. If you do not feel confident doing this, or do not have access to a computer, you may wish to enlist the help of friends or neighbours. Once you are registered, you do not need a computer to use this service. There will be a dedicated phone line to help you. How do I report an abandoned vehicle?

Can I talk to the Parish Council about a planning application I want to make for my home/property in the parish?
The Parish Council does not make decisions about planning applications. That's the job of Dorset Council. But we are consulted about planning applications and we do have considerable experience. Please read more about our role here and, in the first instance, please contact Tamsin Ely , our Parish Clerk, for more information. How do I report possible unauthorised building work/development in the parish?
Possible unauthorised development should be reported on Dorset Council’s enforcement website portal. This could be about: • building works • how land or buildings are used • works to listed buildings • protected trees • the erection of adverts • the use of land for waste disposal • buildings, plant or machinery for refuse or waste materials • the site not meeting the conditions attached to a planning permission • an issue relating to a quarry/mine Read more about how Dorset Council uses enforcement to prevent or remedy unauthorised development. How do I get sandbags in the event of a flood?
Here's what Dorset Council say: "Dorset Council do not have a statutory requirement to provide sandbags, residents with properties at risk from flooding should take steps to source sandbags from their local builder’s merchant for example. In an emergency sandbags may be available from stores located around the county. The Dorset Council sandbag policy and store locations can be found on the Dorset Council website." How do I report blocked road gullies?
