River Char Community Project
Next River Char Community Project Event:
Saturday 25th November 2023 (10am-3pm) Natural Flood Management working party session at Babers Farm.
Following our walk around bountiful Babers Farm in May, we will re-visit the headwaters of the River Char there to do some much-needed Natural Flood Management work on Saturday 25th November.
Hinging hazel and willow into the stream, we’ll be constructing small woody debris dams to slow the flow of the river in heavy rain – a multitude of these structures on our tributaries can really help control flooding downstream in what seem to be ever-more-familiar storms. The group will be led by Nick Gray of Dorset Wildlife Trust and full instruction will be given.
Please dress for the weather… wellies and tough old clothes, all tools provided but please bring your own work gloves… and feel free to bring your favourite billhook / pruning saw if you’ve got one…
There will be work for people of all abilities - but we will be working on very uneven, wet ground with obstacles aplenty, so do take extra care.
Joining instructions for Babers Farm, DT6 5PZ: Babers Farm is first right off Mutton Street, if you're coming from the B3165 at Marshwood.
We will meet for a 10:00am start. The entrance is a small distance down the road from DT6 5PZ. The sign for Babers is more visible if you're approaching downhill from Marshwood village but you won't miss the wide drive entrance coming either way. Proceed down the farm track for a few hundred metres, over the bridge at the bottom, then park on the right - reverse off the track and onto the verge where it is dry - please check before you venture off road! We’ll be there to direct. Please don’t park in front of the big barn at the top…
IT IS VERY HELPFUL TO HAVE AN IDEA OF NUMBERS. PLEASE Email OUR CLERK, TAMSIN, TO LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO COME.
You are, of course, welcome to come just for part of the time. Please feel free to leave whenever you've had enough!
If you arrive late we may be quite hard to find. We will leave instructions. Someone will return to the parking area on the hour (11, 12 and 1pm) to guide late-comers.
You can also text or call Andrew on 07812 349723 on the day if you're trying to find us.
(Email our clerk, Tamsin, and ask to be added to the River Char email list.)
